STATE’S BURN BAN LIFTED TODAY

With the arrival of October, the state’s burn ban is being lifted for 54 counties in the state of Georgia.  Daniel Carpenter, fire safety educator with the Rome Fire Department, says it’s important to get a permit before you burn.  Those in the city of Rome can get one by calling the Rome Fire Department headquarters at (706) 236-4500.  In Floyd County and other areas, call 1-877-OK2BURN.  You can also get a burn permit online at www.GaTrees.org.

RAIN SHOULD CLEAR OUT IN TIME FOR THE FAIR

Hopefully the weather will clear out in time for the Coosa Valley Fair.  Rain moved into the area yesterday and remains in the forecast for today.  The National Weather Service reported just under an inch and a half of rain from yesterday evening thru early this morning.  Today’s forecast calls for a 90 percent chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm with highs around 75.  A 60 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms is in the forecast for tonight with lows 63.  The rain is expected to clear out tomorrow.

The Atlanta Falcons remain undefeated so far for the 2012 season with a 30-28 come-from-behind victory over the Carolina Panthers at the Georgia Dome yesterday.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL UPDATE: WEEK FIVE

In your local college football update, Shorter University’s debut in the Gulf South Conference of the NCAA Division II was spoiled by North Alabama, who beat the Hawks 41-0 in Florence, Alabama on Saturday night.  The Hawks fall to 2-3 so far for the 2012 season.  They’ll be back home at Barron Stadium in Rome this Saturday to host Point University.  Kick off is set for 1:30 pm.  The game will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.

BERRY FOOTBALL UNVEILS HELMET

Berry College has unveiled its football helmet for their inaugural 2013 football season.  The design was initially displayed at a student talent show on the Berry campus earlier this month, according to a Berry sports release.

WINGS OVER NORTH GEORGIA AIR SHOW TO WOW THE CROWDS AT RUSSELL AIRPORT THIS WEEKEND

A big weekend is in store for residents of Rome and Northwest Georgia as the Wings Over North Georgia air show descends upon the Richard B. Russell Airport/Admiral John H. Towers Field.  The air show is set for today thru Sunday and is expected to draw more than 70,000 attendees.  It will be headlined by the Canadian Forces Snowbirds jet team, one of three military jet teams in North America.  It will also feature military demonstrations, civilian aerobatic stars, on-ground aircraft displays and a Kidz’ Zone Play Area.  Other highlights of the air show will include the Smoke-n-Thunder Barbeque Classic and Auto Show and a concert by country music star Aaron Tippin tonight.
