FORMER BERRY BASEBALL STAR MCHUGH PROMOTED TO CLASS AAA

Former Berry College pitcher Collin McHugh is just a step away from the big leagues as he has been promoted to the New York Mets’ Class AAA affiliate in Buffalo, New York.  His promotion came yesterday, according to a Berry sports release.  McHugh is slated to start for the Buffalo Bisons against the Norfolk Tides, a Baltimore Orioles affiliate, today in Norfolk, Virginia.

GEORGIA TO HONOR IRAQ WAR VETERANS IN DOWNTOWN ROME PARADE TOMORROW

Tomorrow will be a big day in downtown Rome as the state of Georgia comes together to honor veterans of the Iraq War with the Georgia Honors Iraq War Veterans parade.  The parade is scheduled to get underway at 11 am and will be followed by entertainment at The Forum.  Iraq War veterans from all over the state will be in town for the event.  Congressmen Phil Gingrey and Tom Graves will be in attendance, along with other dignitaries.  Governor Nathan Deal will read a proclamation at the event at The Forum following the parade.

LOCAL AUTHOR MIKE RAGLAND NOMINATED FOR GEORGIA AUTHOR OF THE YEAR AWARD

Local author Mike Ragland has been nominated for Georgia Author of the Year in the First Novel category by the Georgia Writer’s Association.   The winner will be announced at a special ceremony at Kennesaw State University tomorrow (Saturday) night.   Ragland’s first novel, Bertha, is based on a true story.  It is the story of Bertha Gossett Hill of Cherokee County, Alabama, who was the focus of a murder investigation after her parents and husband died within a year of each other.  The novel covers the events that occurred from inquiry all the way to the final trial and takes place in Floyd County in the 1940s to 1960s.

The Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce joined with the City of Rome and Floyd County to announce the launch of Rome-Floyd County 20/20 III, a dynamic community and economic development strategy intended to ensure that the community is focused on actions necessary to make Rome-Floyd even more competitive regionally, nationally and globally and to attract quality jobs now and in the future.  As part of the process, Market Street Services, an Atlanta-based national economic, community, and workforce development consulting firm, to facilitate the development of its strategy.  

ROME BRAVES SHUT OUT BY SAVANNAH SAND GNATS AT SMS

The Rome Braves were shut out by the Savannah Sand Gnats 6-0 last night in the opener of a four game home stand at State Mutual Stadium.  
The Braves will face the Sand Gnats again tonight at 7 pm at State Mutual Stadium.  The game will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.  JB Smith will go on the air with the pre-game show at 6:45 pm.

ATLANTA BRAVES TO WELCOME BALTIMORE ORIOLES TO TURNER FIELD OVER THE WEEKEND

The Atlanta Braves were off last night and will return to action tonight at Turner Field against the Baltimore Orioles in a three game interleague series that will continue thru Sunday.  First pitch of tonight’s game is set for 7:35 pm.  The game will be broadcast on the AM 1410 WLAQ, Rome’s original home for Atlanta Braves baseball.  Air time for the pre-game show is 6:20 pm from the Atlanta Braves radio network.

MIAMI HEAT TOPS OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER IN GAME TWO OF NBA FINALS

The Miami Heat beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 100-96 last night in game two of the NBA Finals in Oklahoma City.  The series is now tied at a game apiece and will move to Miami for game three this Sunday evening at 8 pm.

BURGETT H. MOONEY JR ROME CLASSIC COMES TO A CLOSE AT COOSA COUNTRY CLUB

The Burgett H. Mooney Jr. Rome Classic golf tournament concluded yesterday at the Coosa Country Club in Rome.  Justin Connelly of McDonough won the championship in the boys’ division, while Madison Lellyo of Windermere, Florida won the girls’ championship.  The tournament was conducted by the American Junior Golf Association.
