GAS LEAK BACKS UP TRAFFIC ON SHORTER AVENUE

A gas leak led to backed up traffic on Shorter Avenue yesterday afternoon.  A utility crew that was working to lay fiber optic cable underground reportedly hit a natural gas line, causing the leak at around 3:45 pm in front of the MidTown Crossing Shopping Center.  Traffic was diverted around the area and was reopened around 5:30 pm.

October is Fire Prevention Month.  And this week is National Fire Prevention Week.  Daniel Carpenter, fire safety educator with the Rome Fire Department, says that Fire Prevention Month was inspired in part by the story of Mrs. O’Leary’s cow, which set off the Great Chicago Fire in 1871.  Fire Prevention Week was instituted in 1922, and President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the first National Fire Prevention Week in 1925.

TELLUS M– USEUM KICKS OFF $1.2 MILLION VISION FOR THE FUTURE CAMPAIGN

The Tellus Science Museum in Cartersville kicked off a $1.2 million Vision for the Future campaign this past Saturday, October 6th at a special luncheon that was hosted by WSB-TV chief meteorologist Glenn Burns.

DOWNTOWN BUSINESSES PARTICIPATE IN ‘SCARECROW STROLL’

If you’ve been on Facebook lately, you may have noticed pictures of scarecrows on the pages of downtown Rome businesses.  That’s because those businesses are participating the ‘Scarecrow Stroll’, which features a contest to see who has the best scarecrow in downtown.  The scarecrows displayed in front of downtown stores.  Romans can cast their votes for best scarecrow.  The winner will be determined on November 5th and will receive $200 to be donated to the charity of their choice.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ON THE FIELD, ON THE RADIO THIS FRIDAY

In just a couple of nights from tonight, Friday night lights will shine as area high school football teams take the field.  And, of course, high school football will take to the airwaves of 95.7 FM The Ridge and WLAQ AM 1410 this Friday night.

NBA PRE-SEASON UNDERWAY, ATLANTA HAWKS TO TAKE ON SAN ANTONIO SPURS TONIGHT IN THE LONE STAR STATE

The NBA pre-season is officially underway, and the Atlanta Hawks will be in San Antonio to take on the Spurs tonight.  Tip off is set for 8:30 pm.
