ROME TEA PARTY LUNCH BUNCH HOLDS FINAL STRAW POLL PRIOR TO JULY 31ST PRIMARY

The Rome TEA Party Lunch Bunch held their final straw poll prior to the July 31st primary yesterday during their regular meeting at Fuddruckers.  Some 70 people weighed in on the candidates and the T-SPLOST referendum.  Many candidates were in attendance at the meeting.

ROME BRAVES DROP SERIES (AND HOME STAND) CLOSER TO ASHEVILLE TOURISTS AT SMS

The Rome Braves lost to the Asheville Tourists 3-1 in the final game of a four game series between the teams (and of an eight game home stand) yesterday afternoon at State Mutual Stadium.

ATLANTA BRAVES BLANKED BY SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS AT TURNER FIELD

The Atlanta Braves saw a seven game winning streak come to an end last night as they were blanked by the San Francisco Giants 9-0 in the opener of a three game series between the teams at Turner Field.  Tough loss for starting pitcher Jair Jurrjens, who exited the game early after allowing eight earned runs and eight hits in three and a half innings.  The Braves will go at it with Giants again tonight at 7:10 pm at “The Ted”.  The game will be broadcast on the AM 1410 WLAQ, Rome’s original home for Atlanta Braves baseball.  Air time for the pre-game show is 5:55 pm from the Atlanta Braves radio network.

JOHN ISNER PAYS A VISIT TO TENNIS CAMP IN ROME

Tennis pro John Isner paid a visit to Berry College yesterday to visit with participants in the 2012 John Isner Tennis Camp.  Some 60 children and teens from around the Southeast witnessed his award-winning techniques at the camp.  Isner took photographs, signed autographs and fielded questions from campers about playing professional tennis.

SHORTER LADY HAWKS RANKED NO. 2 IN WBCA ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL

The Shorter University women’s basketball program has picked up a No. 2 ranking in the NAIA division of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll for the 2011-2012 season.  According to a Shorter sports release, the Lady Hawks, who ranked fourth in the Honor Roll following the 2010-2011 season, compiled a 3.601 team grade point average this season to finish just under six hundredths of a point behind the top-ranked Northwestern from Iowa.  This year’s ranking was the third time the Lady Hawks have made it to the WBCA Academic Top 25 Honor Roll.

NEW NON-PROFIT HOSPICE CARE FACILITY NOW SERVING NWGA RESIDENTS

A new non-profit hospice care facility has opened in Cartersville.  Kathy Cares is an inpatient hospice house, according to the organization’s Redonna Branton.

ROME KIWANIS CLUB HONORS WOMEN IN KIWANIS

The Kiwanis Club of Rome recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of women being voted into Kiwanis membership.  According to a media release from the Rome Kiwanis Club, in the summer of 1987, delegates at the 72nd annual convention voted to allow women to join the organization.  Today, 26 percent of Kiwanis’ total membership is made up of females.

EARLY VOTING CONTINUES

Here’s a reminder that early voting continues at the Floyd County Elections Office at the Floyd County Administration Building on East Fourth Avenue in downtown Rome thru July 27th.  Hours are Monday thru Friday from 8 am until 5 pm.  A special Saturday voting day has been set for July 21st from 9 am until 4 pm.  An additional early voting site will be open at the Rome Civic Center from July 23rd thru 26th.
