‘SKILLS TO JOBS: READY TO HIRE’ SET FOR TODAY AT ROME CIVIC CENTER

The Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Greater Rome Existing Industries Association and Education and Workforce Committees, are sponsoring “Skills to Jobs: Ready to Hire” today from 3 pm until 6 pm at the Rome Civic Center.  The event will include local manufacturers and industries that are experiencing difficulty finding the skilled workforce for their available opportunities, according to a Chamber media release.  Some of the companies set to participate in the event include:  Georgia Power, Marglen Industries, F&P Georgia, OTR Wheel, Rome Tool and Die, Commercial Fluid Power and Suhner Manufacturing.  Potential benefits available to those who attend the event include:  securing an interview for a job, available entry-level position for which advancement is possible through further education/training, identification and matching of needed job skills and internship/apprenticeship.

CONGRESSMAN TOM GRAVES FEELS HOPEFUL FOR NEXT GENERATION

A recent Gallup poll reveals that Americans overall are not satisfied with the next generation’s prospects.  Congressman Tom Graves said in a recent interview on WLAQ AM 1410’s Good Morning Rome that he believes that measures can be taken to make sure that the next generation has it better than the one before them, including placing government in its proper role.

GATHERING BREAKFAST TO RAISE AWARENESS OF COLON CANCER

The Northwest Georgia Regional Cancer Coalition and the 100 Black Men of Rome have planned a Gathering Breakfast for this Saturday, June 9th at 8 am.  According to a release from the Greater Rome Convention and Visitors Bureau, the program will focus on colon cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment and will be held in the Life Center of Love Joy Baptist Church at 436 Branham Avenue.  The event and the meal is free; however, reservations are required and can be made by calling (706) 346-1748 by this Friday.

ROME BRAVES TAKE THE WIN IN HOME STAND OPENER; MOORE, FILAK HEADED TO SAL ALL STAR GAME

The Rome Braves beat the Greenville Drive 5-3 last night in the opener of a three game series between the teams (and of a six game home stand) at State Mutual Stadium.

ATLANTA BRAVES SHUT OUT MIAMI MARLINS IN MIAMI

The Atlanta Braves beat the Miami Marlins 11-0 last night in the series opener between the teams in Miami, Florida.  It was a great night for Tim Hudson, who gave up five hits in the Braves’ shut out of the Marlins.  Dan Uggla was also instrumental in the Braves’ victory over his former team.  He brought in five RBI, including two home runs.

SHORTER’S BROOME, CASTANEDA NABS NFCA HONORS

Two Shorter University softball players have been named first-team NAIA All Americans by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).  According to a Shorter sports release, the NFCA announced last week that senior Charlsie Broome and sophomore Jackie Castaneda received the organization’s recognition.  Both were instrumental in the Lady Hawks’ first ever NAIA national championship, which they clinched on May 23rd in Gulf Shores, Alabama with a 1-0 extra inning victory over Oklahoma City in the title game.

MIAMI MARLINS SELECT SHORTER’S NEWELL IN 7TH ROUND

Congratulations goes out to Shorter University baseball’s Ryan Newell.  The junior pitcher was selected by the Miami Marlins with the 227th overall pick in the seventh round of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday afternoon.  The Marietta native becomes the 17th draft pick in program history and the first since Cliff Flagello was taken by the Baltimore Orioles in 2007, according to a Shorter sports release.
