GDOL: UNEMPLOYMENT UP IN METRO ROME, NORTHWEST GEORGIA

The Georgia Department of Labor has reported that the preliminary unemployment rate for metro Rome rose to 11.2 percent in July, up from 10.6 percent in June.  Metro Rome’s unemployment rate stood at 11.4 percent in July 2011.

FLOYD HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION TO HOST HEALTH AND WEALTH SEMINAR FOR WOMEN OF THE SANDWICH GENERATION

The Floyd Healthcare Foundation will host a Health and Wealth Seminar for women of the Sandwich Generation – those 40 to 65 year olds who are caring for both their children and their parents.  According to a Floyd Medical Center media release, the Foundation’s Planned Gifts Committee has invited a couple of speakers to provide insight to help Sandwichers manage the difficulties posed by this circumstance.

Are you ready for some high school football?  Then be sure to tune in to WLAQ AM 1410 this Saturday night!  We’ll have all the action as the Darlington Tigers kick off their 2012 season in Knoxville, Tennessee against Christian Academy.  Programming will begin with This Week in Northwest Georgia Football at 6:30 pm, followed by the Tiger pre-game at 7:15 pm.  Kick off is set for 7:30 pm.  The game will also be broadcast online at  www.wlaq1410.com.  You can follow the Darlington Tigers all season long on WLAQ.

The Rome Braves took a 6-4 victory from the Hickory Crawdads yesterday in the closer of a three game series in Hickory, North Carolina.

ATLANTA BRAVES CLOSE OUT SERIES IN VICTORIOUS FASHION OVER WASHINGTON NATIONALS IN DC

The Atlanta Braves beat the Washington Nationals 5-1 in the closer of a three game series last night in DC.  Kris Medlen got the win for the Braves; he pitched seven shut-out innings, giving up seven hits.  Great defensive plays also helped the Braves nab the victory.

FORMER BERRY PITCHER TO MAKE MAJOR LEAGUE DEBUT TODAY!!

A former Berry College baseball player will make his Major League debut today!  Collin McHugh, who pitched for the Vikings from 2006-2008, has been promoted to the New York Mets’ parent club and will make his debut with the Mets this afternoon as they host the Colorado Rockies at Citi Field.  McHugh is the first former Berry College player to make it to the big leagues.  His promotion comes on the heels of his being named the International League Pitcher of the Week this past Monday.  He had been with Triple A Buffalo since June.

PROGRESS COMING ALONG ON DOWNTOWN SIDEWALKS, TOP HAT PROPERTY

Progress is coming along on the sidewalk project in downtown Rome.  Rome Development Authority Director Ann Arnold says that businesses are still accessible to downtown shoppers while construction is being completed.
Among the recent changes in downtown Rome has been the destruction of the old Top Hat building at the corner of Broad Street and Third Avenue.  Arnold says plans are for the DDA to take over the property and construct a parking lot in that area.  She says that the DDA will enter into a three year lease on the property with its owner, with an option to extend that lease.
