SHORTER BASKETBALL SPLITS AT SOUTHERN POLY

Shorter University’s women’s and men’s basketball teams split a pair of games with Southern Poly last night in Marietta.  The 22nd ranked Lady Hawks won their game 66-58.  The number one Hawks lost to number four Southern Poly 87-84.  It was the first Southern States Athletic Conference loss for the Hawks, who moved back to the top spot in the latest NAIA Men’s Basketball Top 25 Coaches’ Poll released last night.     

ATLANTA HAWKS OUT WEST TO TAKE ON LA LAKERS TONIGHT

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks are on the road for their next five games.   They’ll begin their road trip out west with a match against the Los Angeles Lakers tonight in LA.  Tip off is set for 10:30 pm. The Hawks currently have 18 wins and 11 losses overall so far for the 2011-2012 season.

ADVANCE VOTING BEGINS TODAY FOR MARCH 6TH PRIMARY

Advance voting for the March 6th presidential primary election begins today.  It will be offered thru March 2nd at the Floyd County Elections office located inside the Floyd County Administration Building on East Fourth Avenue in downtown Rome.  The office will be open to voters until 5 pm on weekdays and on one Saturday, February 25th from 9 am until 4 pm.  A second location will be open at the Rome Civic Center during the final week of early voting.  

FLOYD COUNTY COMMISSION TO MEET TOMORROW

The Floyd County Commission will meet in regular session tomorrow.  They’ll meet in a caucus session at noon, which will be followed by their regular meeting at 2 pm at the Floyd County Administration Building on East Fourth Avenue in downtown Rome.  Take a look at their agenda online at www.romefloyd.com.

UPGRADES IN STORE FOR CHIEFTAINS M– USEUM

The Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home is due for some upgrades in the near future.  Chairman of the Board Ruth Demeter says that the changes are based on recommendations that resulted from a recent study of the museum and include an interpretive center.  

ROME FLOYD SPORTS HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCES 2012 INDUCTEES

In news from over the weekend, the Rome-Floyd Sports Hall of Fame  has announced that four will be inducted into the 2012 Rome-Floyd Sports Hall of Fame.  The inductees include:  Willie Brown, Amateur Athletics; Mary Brock McMahon, Amateur Athletics; Bob Williams, Meritorious Service and Dwight Henderson, Lifetime Achievement.  All will be honored on Monday, February 27th at Krannert Center at Berry College.  There will be a reception, dinner banquet and awards ceremony.  Tickets are available for $25 each and can be purchased at the Rome Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority at 1 Shorter Avenue.  For more information, call Parks and Rec at (706) 291-0766.  
The Rome Floyd Sports Hall of Fame started in 1971 to recognize amateur and professional athletes and those who contribute to the growth and development of sports.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL WEEKEND UPDATE

 In your local college basketball update from over the weekend, Shorter University’s 23rd ranked Lady Hawks picked up a 72-45 victory from Brenau University on Saturday at Shorter’s Winthrop King Centre, allowing the Lady Hawks to notch its fifth straight 20-win season.  Shorter has won at least twenty games every season since 2007-2008.  Head Coach Vic Mitchell said in a post game interview with 95.7 FM The Ridge’s Jim Bojo that he is proud of this accomplishment.
