HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL MATCH UPS FOR THIS WEEKEND

ATLANTA HAWKS PICK UP HOME VICTORY FROM CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks picked up a convincing 111-81 win over the Charlotte Bobcats last night at the Philips Arena.  With the win, the Hawks improve their record to eight wins and four losses so far for the 2011-2012 season.  The Hawks have another home game tomorrow night – they’ll host the Minnesota Timberwolves at 7 pm.

SHORTER UNIVERSITY BASKETBALL TEAMS VICTORIOUS OVER SOUTHERN WESLEYAN; COLLEGE BASKETBALL TO BE ON AIR THIS WEEKEND

It was a victorious night for Shorter University’s basketball teams, who host Southern Wesleyan University last night at Shorter’s Winthrop King Centre.  The 21st ranked Lady Hawks won their match 75-48.  The number two Hawks remain undefeated after picking up a 71-54 win over the Warriors.  Shorter’s basketball teams will travel to Franklin Springs, Georgia take on Emmanuel College tomorrow.  The women will play at 2 pm, followed by the men at 4 pm.  The games will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.  

US SENATOR JOHNNY ISAKSON BACK TO WORK AS 112TH CONGRESS CONTINUES

The 112th session of Congress reconvened last week.  US Senator Johnny Isakson says he is not entirely satisfied with the accomplishments of last year during the first year of the 112th and hopes for a better second and final year of the session this year.

RAIN AND MILD TEMPERATURES TO GIVE WAY TO SUNSHINE AS WE HEAD INTO THE WEEKEND, WINDY DAY ON TAP FOR TODAY

Rain and mild temperatures have covered Rome and Floyd County for the last few days, but they’re about to move out.  Rain will give way to just clouds as today progresses into this evening.  Highs will be around the mid 50s.  A wind advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service that takes effect at 10 am this morning and remains in effect until midnight tonight.  Winds could gust as high as 30 miles per hour.  Some areas to the north of us have a chance of snow today.  Lows tonight will drop to the 20s.  Cooler temperatures are on tap and the sunshine is expected to return this weekend.

DARLINGTON’S PIERONI TAPPED FOR SAIS-SACS ACCREDITATION TEAM

Angela Pieroni, dean of grades 7 and 8 (and an eighth grade science teacher) at Darlington School, has been tapped to serve as a member of the SAIS-SACS accreditation team that will visit St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Athens in May.  According to a Darlington media release, the visit will last approximately two and a half days.  Pieroni, who has been a member of the Darlington Middle School faculty since 2001,  will join with other members of the team to review the school’s compliance with SAIS-SACS standards/indicators and its self study; tour the school; and speak with a number of stakeholders, including administrators, faculty/staff, parents, board members and students.  The visit will conclude with the team’s creation of a visit report, which will provide a recommendation to the SAIS Accreditation Committee regarding the school’s accreditation.

REDMOND REGIONAL WINS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD

The Partnership for Health and Accountability (PHA) has presented its prestigious Quality and Patient Safety Award to Redmond Regional Medical Center for its program that reduced Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors at a local industries partnered with Redmond’s Occupational Health Team.  This was the sixth year that Redmond has won a patient safety award at the Georgia Hospital Association’s Partnership for Health and Accountability annual Patient Safety Summit.  According to a Redmond media release, the 2011 project, entitled “Reducing Communities Risk of Cardiovascular through Effective Worksite Risk Reduction Programs” won second place in the Hospitals Category with 100-299 beds.

Tune in for Shorter University basketball tonight on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.  Shorter’s 21st ranked Lady Hawks and 2nd ranked and undefeated Hawks will host Southern Wesleyan in a couple of Southern States Athletic Conference matches at the Winthrop King Centre on the Shorter University campus.  Tip off is set for 6 pm for the women and 8 pm for the men.  More Shorter University basketball is on tap for this Saturday on 95.7 FM The Ridge as the teams travel to Franklin Springs, Georgia take on Emmanuel College.  The women will play at 2 pm, followed by the men at 4 pm.
