WLAQ 1410 AM TO BROADCAST GEORGIA TECH BOWL GAME ACTION AS THE JACKETS FACE UTAH IN SUN BOWL ON NEW YEAR’S EVE

College bowl season is here, and WLAQ AM 1410, Rome’s radio home for Georgia Tech football, will bring you all the action tomorrow as the Yellow Jackets face Utah in the Hyundai Sun Bowl.  Kick off for the New Year’s Eve showdown is set for 2 pm at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas.  Pre-game programming will begin with the Yellow Jacket Countdown at noon.

ATLANTA HAWKS HOPE TO CONTINUE WINNING WAYS TONIGHT AT PHILIPS AGAINST NEW JERSEY NETS

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks are off to a 2-0 start for the 2011-2012 season and hope to continue their winning ways tonight as they host the New Jersey Nets (whom they beat in their season opener on Tuesday night).  Tip off is set for 7:30 pm at the Philips Arena.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL ON THE RADIO TODAY

In your local college basketball update, Berry College’s Vikings lost to Centre College 69-54 yesterday in the Papa John’s/Country Hearth Inn Tournament at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky.  The Vikes will take on Johns Hopkins in the tournament’s consolation game today.

NEW YEAR’S HOLIDAY TRAVEL PERIOD TO BEGIN THIS EVENING

The New Year’s holiday travel period gets underway this evening at 6 pm and ends at midnight, Sunday, January 2, 2012.  State troopers will be out in force, searching for impaired drivers, speeders and those not wearing seat belts.  According to a media release from the Georgia State Patrol, over last year’s New Year’s holiday period, state troopers investigated 320 traffic crashes in Georgia that resulted in 270 injuries and seven fatalities.  Some 174 people were arrested for driving under the influence.

ROME AND FLOYD COUNTY DECLARED ELIGIBLE FOR SBA ASSISTANCE FOLLOWING LAST THURSDAY’S TORNADO

The Floyd County Emergency Management Agency has received word that Rome and Floyd County is eligible for assistance from the US Small Business Administration following the tornado that hit the area last Thursday, December 22nd.  A disaster loan outreach center will open at the Northwest Georgia Health District at 1309 Redmond Road in Rome on Tuesday from noon until 6 pm.  It will continue to serve storm victims from Wednesday, January 4th thru Friday, January 6th from 9 am until 6 pm, Saturday, January 7th from 9 am until 1 pm, and Monday, January 9th thru Thursday, January 12th from 9 am until 6 pm.  It will be closed Sunday, January 8th.

BLAINE WILLIAMS EAGER TO PERMANENTLY BECOME FLOYD COUNTY MANAGER

The year 2012 is almost here.  And when it arrives, interim Floyd County Manager Blaine Williams will take the position of manager permanently.  He fills the spot vacated by Kevin Poe, who left Floyd County to take over as manager of Jackson County.

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DROPS IN METRO ROME, NORTHWEST GEORGIA

State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler has announced that the preliminary unemployment rate in metro Rome dropped to 10.4 percent in November, down from 11.1 percent in October.  Metro Rome’s jobless rate stood at 10.7 percent in November 2010.
