ATLANTA BRAVES BLANKED BY TORONTO BLUE JAYS IN SERIES FINALE, FREEMAN SIDELINED FOR AT LEAST 10 WEEKS

Written by Matt Davis on May 19, 2017. Posted in Sports

The Atlanta Braves were blanked by the Toronto Blue Jays 9-0 on Thursday night at SunTrust Park, allowing the Blue Jays to avoid being swept in the four game series between the teams that began earlier this week with two games in Toronto and ended with a pair at the Braves’ new ballpark.

Julio Teheran allowed a career-high nine runs over just three innings in the loss for Atlanta, including three homers.  He also gave up eight hits, walked one and struck out two over just three innings.

Marcus Stroman earned the win for Toronto after giving up seven hits over five and two-third scoreless innings, striking out six and walking one.  He aided his own cause with a solo home run in the fourth, the first of his career and the second by a pitcher in Blue Jays history.

Darrell Ceciliani, who was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday, contributed a run-scoring double in the first and a two-run homer in the third before departing the game due to a shoulder injury.  Luke Maile also homered for the Blue Jays; his solo shot came right before Stroman’s in the fourth.

The Braves will welcome the Washington Nationals to SunTrust Park for a three-game set over the weekend.  First pitch of tonight’s series opener is set for 7:35 pm.  Air time for pre-game programming is 6:20 pm.

In other news from the Braves, Freddie Freeman is expected to be sidelined for at least 10 weeks due to a broken left wrist.  He was hit by a pitch from Toronto’s Aaron Loup during the fifth inning of the Braves’ 8-4 victory over the Blue Jays on Wednesday night.

In a minor league update, the Rome Braves edged the Lexington Legends 7-6 in the opener of a four game set at State Mutual Stadium on Thursday night.  The teams will meet again this evening at 7 pm.
