Rome and Floyd County Schools, along with a host of other school systems in Northwest Georgia, are closed today due to concerns over the potential for winter weather in our area.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the area that remains in effect until 11 am this morning.  A chance of rain mixed with freezing rain is in the forecast during that time, transitioning to just rain in the afternoon.  Forecasters are warning local residents to be prepared for slippery roads, slow down and use caution while driving.

Locals can get updates on winter weather in the area by signing up for Floyd County’s CodeRED weather alert system online at www.romefloyd.com, says Emergency Management Agency director Tim Herrington, who additionally urges the public to download the Floyd EMA mobile app free of charge from Google Play and Apple’s iTunes.

Here’s the good news (for those who like warmer temperatures) – a warm-up is predicted as we continue through the week.  Highs are expected to top off in the low 60s by Thursday.  A chance of showers is in the forecast through the weekend, according to the NWS.
