The slate of events to be held locally during the 2018 Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend has been announced.  The celebration will begin on Friday, January 12th and continue through MLK Day, Monday, January 15th.

Highlights will include the annual prayer breakfast on Saturday, January 13th at 9 am in the Lovejoy Baptist Church Joy Life Center.  Dr. Eric Holland, the principal of Rome High School, will be the keynote speaker.  Tickets are $15 each for the event and may be purchased at Kroger.

The local MLK weekend celebration will culminate with the annual Freedom March down Broad Street on MLK Day.  Participants will assemble at 11 am at the corner of Broad and First Avenue.  The march will begin at 11:30 am and make its way to the Rome City Auditorium, where the celebration will continue with a program at noon for which Cassandra Wheeler, Regional Director at Georgia Power Company, will be the speaker.

Other activities featured on the MLK weekend calendar of events include a talent and fashion show at the Rome City Auditorium on Friday, January 12th at 6:30 pm.  An ecumenical service will be held on the evening of Sunday, January 14th at 5 pm at Thankful Baptist Church, located at 935 Spider Webb Drive/Nim Russell Boulevard in Rome; the Reverend Dr. Darrell E. Elligan, Pastor of The True Light Baptist Church of Atlanta, will serve as the guest speaker for that event.
